‘Long time no see’ will be your thought! That’s right, this year I took a unique long Summer holiday! Enjoying the beach, prairie and spending family life at the country-side (‘Jardin de la terre …un petite coin perdu..’), visiting many beautiful exhibitions & reading the books that arrived on my desk. Lovely, Like several of the other subjects I once spoke about also this one is known since ancient times. Memento mori jewellery do exist since Roman times and revived in the late Middle Ages, but combined with Christian teaching on the need to live a good life.
These both sensitive subject are beautifully described in the book ‘Rings, Jewelry Since the antiquity pearls are noticed for their natural beauty and therefore legendary. Like “Tears of the Gods that had fallen into the sea”, “Dew gathered in sea shells” and are often seen in important royal treasures.
Although the natural pearl forming process is a complicated one I will try to explain it in a brief I just received in my mailbox the news that Liesbeth de Besten has written an indispensable handbook of international contemporary jewellery art, introducing its tendencies and role from the late 1960s to today within the context of current trends in art and society.
